A Yooper's Summer on Isle Royale

Five Stars - A very entertaining read!, January 5th, 2014

I enjoyed this book! The author has a knack for story telling. I laughed out loud at his descriptions of his exploits. I felt I was on Isle Royale with him and sharing his experiences.

Five Stars - Will inspire you., May 21st,  2013

The second thought about this book is it will inspire you to visit this beautiful, natural and remote National Park.

The first reaction you will have is reliving your own youthful stupid stunts. Dan's trip to Isle Royale in a 14ft. boat goes beyond dangerous that most of us did. My wife and I have now been to the park twice and know Lake Superior's reputation for loss of life, being suddenly violent and unforgiving. We have traveled from the shortest mainland point, Copper Harbor, to Isle Royale in a 57 ft. boat and still feel it can be a dangerous, almost four hour, 50 mile trip in good weather. Glad Dan lived.

The stories on the Island are fun/easy reading that will have you wanting to visit the park and experience it for yourself. It remains absolutely unspoiled with no roads, no cars and not even bicycles. You will also meet and experience Yoopers (those from the upper peninsula of Michigan) that Dan talks about and is himself. They seem to be as unique to the U.S. as the Cajuns of the Bayou area are. Hope you enjoy the book as I did and hope you visit the National Park.

Five Stars - A "Double Yowza" for Dan!, July 31st,  2013

Being a "Yooper" myself, I think it was high time someone wrote a book about the "hijinks" that took place growing up in this very special part of the world. The perceived invincibility we enjoyed in our youth is present in every page of this hilarious book. I've purchased about 20 books to gift to family and friends...and everyone from my 90 year old aunt to folks who have never set foot in the UP have enjoyed it immensely. One of my friends captured it best calling it "a blend of Huck Finn and Lake Wobegon." Once you pick this book up, you won't want to put it down...it's a fun read! A Yooper's Summer on Isle Royale gets my coveted "DOUBLE YOWZA!"

Five Stars - Very entertaining and enjoyable. Loved it!, June 24th,  2013

Dan did a great job in telling about their summer on Isle Royale. I'm glad that they made the trip safely. Having grown up near Lake Superior, I know how fast the lake can change. Would have loved to have been a mosquito in the air watching all the adventures. Great job! Ellen Vivian and Michelle Lammi

Five Stars - Great read and could almost live the story!, June 2nd,  2013

Just loved the book and story. Brought me back to my youth and boy scout trip to the island. Isle Royle is a special parkand Dan's story tells it in a way that makes you savor the moments he and Digger adventured there.

I thought the information about Isle Royale was interesting and added to the interest of the story. I would recommend this book whole heartedly!

Five Stars - Fabulous read. A great vicarious Yooper experience., November 7th,  2013

Dan Kemp is the best story teller, ever !! Made me feel like I was there, which was a bit scary and exciting. Don't you just dread looking back at those youthful adventures that could have killed you or landed you in a lot of trouble? Dan and his buddies prove that life really is an adventure. It can be fun to look back in amazement and say WOW! That is how the book reads, totally enjoyable and makes you glad it is a vicarious experience. HA! :) Great first book Dan, keep them coming.

Five Stars - This book need to be a movie., October 23rd,  2013

If there was ever a book that needed to be a movie, this is it! The storyline equals the best, funny movie I've ever seen. This refreshing glance back to the 60's, is a book that's hard to put down. It's a cliffhanger, as you anticipate the next set of antics by the main characters. If you like humor, you won't be disappointed. The book is delightful and wonderful!
